Services and Research

The Peripro network started in Innsbruck in March 2004. Innsbruck is the capital city of the federal state of Tyrol in western Austria. Innsbruck is located in the Inn Valley at the junction with the Wipptal (Sill River), which provides access to the Brenner Pass, some 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Innsbruck. The network was created as an initiative to improve the pediatric healthcare in the South West region of Austria trying to avoid politicization and emphasizing the well-being of children and parents. Periodic meetings on perinatal pathology between peripheral hospitals and the Medical University of Innsbruck allowed a review of difficult cases with clinico-pathological correlations.

The network has grown from an experiment to an impressive, ubiquitous network and has now onboard a very large range of sub-specialties providing care and consultation almost worldwide with local members operating in several countries. The initial work started with the provision of hospital based morphologic-diagnostic services to the local population of Tyrol at the Medical University of Innsbruck. The perfect location of Innsbruck was crucial to establish cooperation with many countries. Cooperation partners are now providing the service in different areas worldwide. The network extended progressively from a pretty clinical service to a sophisticated bio-medical research.

March 2004 – March 2007 was a triennial of continuing progress for the Tyrolean Perinatal Program. With the help and support of all our staff and external supporters, we have made great progress in improving the care we provide and putting this network ahead in Tyrol, the South West Region of Austria. Dr. Christina Falkeis and Dr. Thomas Hager are now responsible for the Pediatric Pathology Unit of the Medical University of Innsbruck.

Dr. Consolato Sergi is the founder of the network and works currently as principal investigator and professor (special continuing) at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (Canada). Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. The city is located on the North Saskatchewan River in the central region of the province and is Canada's second most populous provincial capital (after Toronto). The city is a cultural, governmental and educational centre.

We are committed to developing our staff by offering them learning and research opportunities that will ultimately improve the care and services we offer our patients. We have also strengthened our research portfolio over the last year with national and international research projects. Our activities can be summarized in three subheadings:

1)      Diagnostic Services

2)      Biotechnology for Life & Research

3)      Social Activities
